CODE 14
Code 14 driver’s license (officially Code EC) permits you to operate articulated heavy vehicles and combinations with a Gross Vehicle Mass exceeding 16,000 kg. It is South Africa’s highest tier of license and is essential for careers in long-haul trucking, logistics, and commercial transport.
Pre-Requisites
Before attempting a Code 14 practical driving test, you must meet the following baseline requirements:
- Age: You must be at least 18 years old.
- Learner’s License: You must obtain a Code C1 or EC learner’s license prior to training.
- PrDP (Professional Driving Permit): Required to operate these vehicles for commercial purposes or hire.
Testing Process
The evaluation consists of two parts, both of which must be passed consecutively to receive your license:
- The Yard Test: Assesses your ability to control the heavy vehicle in a closed area. Tasks include alley docking, left/right reversing, and a pres-trip air-brake inspection.
- The Road Test: Evaluates your driving competence, observation, and adherence to K53 rules in live traffic.
