Code 10 driving license (Code C1) in South Africa allows you to drive any heavy motor vehicle or truck with a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) between 3,500 kg and 16,000 kg, plus a trailer up to 750 kg.
1. The Yard Test
Before moving, you will have to pass a pre-trip inspection where you check the vehicle’s roadworthiness, fluid levels, tires, and lights. Once inside, you will need to perform specific maneuvers in a closed yard:
- Alley Docking: Reversing the heavy vehicle into a marked bay without touching or knocking over the poles.
- Incline Start: Stopping the vehicle on an uphill (without rolling back) and safely taking off.
- Left Turn: Navigating a 90-degree left turn in a forward and reverse motion.
2. The Road Test
After passing the yard test, you will take the vehicle onto public roads. The examiner evaluates your ability to obey road signs, maintain lane discipline, safely change lanes, give way, and perform proper K53 observations (checking mirrors and blind spots before every move).
Preparing for Your Test
- Learning: You must have a valid Code C1 learner’s license to take lessons.
- Professional Help: Because heavy vehicles require a wider turning radius and different gear-changing techniques, consider enrolling in lessons at a local driving school to practice on official test routes and parking yards.
- Applying: Book your test date and register your licensing application at your nearest local driving license testing center (DLTC).
