Articulated Dump Truck
An articulated dump truck (ADT) is a heavy-duty, all-wheel-drive off-highway vehicle used to transport large volumes of material over uneven terrain, steep grades, and adverse jobsite conditions. It features a unique pivoting “joint” or hinge between the front tractor and the rear dump box, allowing excellent maneuverability.
Key Design Features
-
- Pivoting Joint: The hinge between the tractor and trailer allows the front and rear wheels to follow the exact same path, preventing the truck from getting stuck and giving it superior off-road capability.
- 6×6 Configuration: Most ADTs use a six-wheel-drive setup for maximum traction in mud, loose gravel, and steep inclines.
- Oscillating Frame: Allows the front and rear portions of the truck to twist independently, keeping all tires firmly on the ground even over extreme ruts and bumps.
Leading Manufacturers & Capacities
- Bell Equipment: A major presence in Southern Africa, offering models ranging from the compact 18-tonne \(18\text{ t}\) B18E up to massive 45-tonne \(45\text{ t}\) hauling workhorses like the B5OE
- Caterpillar: Renowned worldwide for their Cat Articulated Trucks, focusing on automotive-style cabs, advanced telematics, and heavy-duty payload capacities.
- Volvo Construction Equipment: Pioneers in ADT technology since the 1960s, highly utilized in regional mining and quarrying applications.
Operation & Safety
Operating an ADT requires specialized heavy equipment licensing (like a Code 10 driver’s license alongside an ADT operator’s certificate). Because these vehicles have a high center of gravity when fully loaded, operators must navigate sharp curves carefully and maintain properly graded haul roads.
